D.O.N.S.
With a canny knack for updating dance music’s most classic
tracks for the modern dancefl oor, Hamburg’s D.O.N.S. has
made his name with a series of massive remakes, gracing the
boxes of the world’s biggest DJs.
With his remix touch sought out by the self-same top jocks,
including Erick Morillo, Bob Sinclar, Roger Sanchez and John
conds with...
Dahlbäck, and his own label, Kingdom Kome Cuts, going from
strength to strength, even welcoming original disco diva
Gloria Gaynor to its folds, 2010 sees the culmination of his
hard work in the release of debut album, ‘Design on Sound’.

And while he doesn’t like to talk about it, he also does a lot of
work for charity, mate.

What can we expect from your much-anticipated debut
album?
“It’s going to be my singles ‘Pump Up The Jam’, ‘Big Fun’ and
‘The Night train’, my collaborations with Gloria Gaynor and
Jocelyn Brown, ‘Keep on Singing’ with Terri B, my single ‘Drop
the Gun’ and a few more tracks, half covers, half my own mate-
rial. There might also be a remix CD. I just counted, and I’ve
done 60 over the last year, so I’m owed some!”
After reworking so many classic tunes, are there any tracks
you’d consider too sacred to remix?
“I’m probably the biggest James Brown fan on the planet. I
have all his original albums on record. I wouldn’t be able to
touch ‘Sex Machine’. He’s probably one of the only artists who
infl uenced me. I only remix songs I really like, but I got a little
tired of remakes, which is why I started doing my own material
again.”
Alongside DJs like Tiësto, you’re an ambassador for HIV/
Aids charity Dance4Life. How did you get involved and what
kind of stuff do you do for them?
“I played for them in Miami and we started talking. Music is my
life but if it can accomplish a little more in helping people, that
would be perfect for me.
“The exclusive single I recorded, ‘Breathe Into Me’, is being
played in over 10,000 Lee Mills fi tness studios worldwide. They
have a new programme called Bodyjam and I donated a track
to them. All the income raised from it will go to Dance4Life.
I’m also supporting their school projects in Germany talking to
pupils about the dangers of Aids. I’ve started in the acquisition
of new schools and already have some giving Dance4Life the
opportunity to show what they do. I’m also donating some of
the money from my album.”
How has Germany, which is best known for more minimal
house and techno, taken to you?
“I don’t play in Germany very often but I have a month there
during my album tour. I play funky tech house, so it’s not
always easy, but the reaction is normally pretty good — I have
a very high rebooking rate. I think people are getting bored
with minimal.”
