CASE STUDY
Facing the
facts about fine art
Fine art photography can
be successfully realised
using digital print
techniques, as this
exhibition of large format
portraits demonstrates
I
n total, 160 large format fine art photo
prints were created as part of Belgian
photographer, Stephan Vanfleteren's
exposition 'Portret 1989 – 2009', taking place
in Ghent, Belgium, until end of December. The
photographer selected the Mutoh Zephyr UV
printer to reproduce his striking portraits.
Mutoh Europe’s Zephyr is a CMYK 165cm
professional UV inkjet printer, suitable for roll-
to-roll and rigid board printing up to a
thickness of 20mm. For rigid printing, media
transport tables can be placed at the back and
in front of the machine.
The printer utilises Mutoh proprietary Mutoh Europe’s Zephyr printer is designed to produce top quality prints for close viewing distances
flexible UV inks, formulated to allow printing
on a range of rigid substrates. The system is
designed to produce top quality prints for close
viewing distances and can operate at speeds of
between 3.5 and 7.5m
2
/h for this kind of job.
Prints for medium viewing distances can be
produced at speeds between 15 and 20 m
2
/h.
For larger viewing distances, print speeds up to
30 m
2
/h can be reached.
In fact, Vanfleteren’s images were printed
onto wide format Vikupor Digital White foam
board panels in sizes varying from 0.43 by
0.43m up to 1.2 by 1.5m.
The Vikupor Digital White foam board
panels were chosen for their surprisingly good
imitation of fine art photo paper, with a similar
white point and surface structure.
To finish the Zephyr fine art prints, the new
MACtac LUV3890 UV laminating film was
used to protect the images against incoming
light. As a result, the fine art prints did not
have to be covered by glass. This provides
visitors to the exposition the benefit of looking
at the photographs without the bother of
reflections, independent of the viewing angle.
A Youtube movie is now available on-line
demonstrating how the wide format portraits
were created for the Stephan Vanfleteren
portrait exposition. Portraits were printed directly onto wide format Vikupor Digital White foam
board panels
