Your union
Get an MDA!
Local NUT associations and divisions are invited to submit nominations for the union’s regional/Wales Membership Development Awards. These annual awards acknowledge and reward good practice in membership recruitment and retention at local level.
Nominations should explain, in no more than 200 words, why an individual member or team deserves to be recognised for the recruitment work they have done in 2009. Supporting materials are welcome. Entry forms are available from the NUT organising and membership department on 020 7380 4780 or regional/Wales offices – see page 47.
Nominations must be received by the relevant regional/Wales secretary by 22 January. The awards will be presented at the union’s 2010 annual conference in Liverpool
at Easter.

Celebrate teaching
Nominations are now open for the 2010 Teaching Awards, and Will Wyatt CBE, chair of the Teaching Awards Trust, is urging NUT members to get involved.
After a year in the role, Will says: “I know more than I ever did before of the skills, dedication and inspiration of good teachers, and of their generosity towards each other. Individual winners always pay fulsome tribute to colleagues in their teams and, indeed, we have introduced a new award for 2010 which will recognise the best staff teams in the country.”
Other award categories include:
• Teacher of the year – primary and secondary
• Headteacher of the year – primary and secondary
• Outstanding new teacher of the year
• Teaching assistant of the year
• Governor of the year
• Sustainable schools
• Enterprise
• Next generation learning
• Promotion of the Welsh language
• Lifetime achievement

From persecution to pride
The NUT will be marking both Holocaust Memorial Day and Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender History Month with an event at NUT headquarters, Hamilton House in London on 29 January from 5pm to 7.30pm.
The theme ‘From Persecution to Pride’ has been chosen to raise awareness of the killing of LGBT people during the Holocaust, present-day transphobia/homophobia, and activities for LGBT History Month – February.
Confirmed speakers include
• Michael Brown, the child of Holocaust victims and an LGBT activist for 50 years
• Adam Rogalewski, an LGBT trade union official based in Poland, currently working in Unison’s Migrant Workers’ Unit
• Elly Barnes, NUT member, secondary teacher
• Annie Southerst of the Albert Kennedy Trust, which supports homeless LGBT young people.
The event is free and open to all. If you wish to attend, contact Hellen Njie (
h.njie@nut.org.uk) by 22 January 2010.
