HE’S no bookworm, but
Dobromir Pietras is
never as happy as he is when
surrounded by books –
breathtakingly beautiful,
hand-crafted volumes of all
shapes and sizes.
From their comfortable
home in Ayr, Dobromir and
his partner Magdalena Dudzic
are building up a nice little
business for themselves
offering personalised books
for special occasions. Bound
in leather, they tend to be
special editions of famous
works, photo albums or gifts
for very special presentations.
The story of their life in
Scotland seems to be shaping
up nicely, too, but the
opening chapter for Dobromir
was not a particularly happy
one. In 2006, an agency in
Poland found him a summer
job at a holiday camp in
Ayrshire but, he says frankly:
“I did not like it.”
Little wonder. He had gone
from an absorbing job with a
publishing and bookbinding
firm in Poland – where his
duties covered everything
from making books to
production control, customer
service, building up client
relationships and meeting
key politicians – to working in
reception at Craig Tara
holiday park.
