bob, or loose fl owing locks for your big day, bridal hair
stylist Cathy McNulty is on hand with her top tips.

no one wants a bad hair day on their wedding day, so the earlier you start to
plan the better. i recommend brides-to-be have their fi rst consultation with a
hair stylist about six months before the wedding. this will give you a chance to
get your hair into the best possible condition and allow you plenty of time for
trial runs. talk through possible styles with your stylist so he/she can advise you
about length and colour. you do not need to set on a defi nite style this early in
the process, but remember that a lot of styles will require a certain length, so if
you want to let your hair grow, now is the time to start!
deep conditioning treatments are very important to get your hair ready for
styling, and you should begin using a hair mask about twice a week, up until a
week before your wedding to improve the condition and fi x the damage done
to your hair by hair dryers and straighteners. you can get treatments done in a
salon or buy a good treatment to use at home.
CUT & CoLoUr
at your initial consultation, when you have decided on a basic style, you should
get a good cut and colour that you can maintain through regular trims and top ups.
now is not the time to drastically change your hair cut or colour, as you may end
up unhappy with the result and be unable to grow it out in time for your wedding.

your wedding day hairstyle will depend on: your dress and veil styles; your
wedding theme; the cut, colour and condition of your hair; and your personality.
a sleek up do might look perfect on one bride but completely wrong for another,
so try to refl ect your own personality and individual style.
it is best to have your hair trial about six weeks before the wedding. Make sure
you are prepared and bring along any pictures from magazines or the internet of
styles you would like to try. at the moment many brides are opting for soft curls,
hollywood glamour and styles they have seen in movies. it’s also important to
realise that you can’t fi ght the natural texture of your hair and you should make the
most of what you already have, rather than going for a look that isn’t really you.
diAmonds ArE A GirL’s BEsT friEnd
if you decide not to wear a veil, there are lots of accessories that can add instant
glamour to your hair. tiaras, jewelled hairpins, or a simple fl ower can be eye-
catching and add individuality for non-traditional brides.
When you’re shopping for hair accessories, remember that those with
diamante detail and crystals are more noticeable in darker hair, whereas you will
need a solid piece if you have lighter hair. it’s also a good idea to wear your hair
in your bridal style (or as close to it as possible) so you will be able to pick an
accessory that compliments your style rather than overpowers it.
