The festival in downtown Bunnell will feature
carnival rides and games, a Beef and Potatoes
Cook-off, a pageant to crown Bunnell’s lovely
“Potato Princesses,” and, of course, potatoes.
Proceeds raised from the event will fund
scholarships awarded each year to one or more graduating
seniors who reside in Bunnell.

The Carolina’s Connection
T
he speaker for the May 7 meeting of the DeBary Garden
Club will be Susan Young, published writer and photog-
rapher. “Some of Florida’s native plants are also happy in
the Carolina Mountains. How did they get there and how
do they survive?” asks Young. These plants include reindeer
moss, jack-in-the-pulpit, yucca, partridgeberry, doghobble
and carnivorous plants. There will be a slide show and plant
books available.
DeBary Garden Club meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first
Thursday of the month at the Civic Center, 38 South Shell
Road in DeBary. Membership is $15 per year. Contact Christy

Mexican Restaurant Distinctive

n a dinner offered by the or-
ganizers of the 2008 Produce
Marketing Association, PMA,
the largest event of the agricul-
ture-food industry, the recogni-
tion of 15 authentic Mexican
restaurants took place for the
first time in the state of Florida.
With the participation of
secretary of The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural
Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Jeffrey Max
Jones, the general coordinator of marketing and promotion of
exports, Blanca Villarello and president of the Foundation of
Authentic Flavors from Mexico, Alejandro Borja.
In this moving award ceremony, an “Authentic Mexican
Restaurant” distinctive was given to each of fifteen restau-
rants for offering authentic Mexican dishes in their menus
and for their continuing efforts educating and informing
their customers about rich Mexican traditions. Penachos of
DeLand was one of those awarded. Kudos to the De LaVega
family for this outstanding acknowledgement.
