Now you can buy a VHF radio with an extra safety feature called DSC. Digital Select Calling (DSC) is a tone signalling system that operates on VHF Channel 70. All commercial ships over 300 tons and the coast guard now monitor Channel 70 for distress calls. A radio’s DSC system includes a unique nine-digit identification number, its Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI). Register your MMSI with the United States FCC or Industry Canada and your information is entered into a coast guard database. Radios with DSC allow for one-touch emergency signalling including the MMSI, purpose of the call and GPS position. DSC also allows for private ship-to-ship calls by calling individual MMSI numbers. The Standard Horizon HX850S is one of the first handheld
VHFs to fully support DSC capabilities. Equipped with a 12- channel GPS Receiver, the HX850S allows for sending exact GPS location information in a DSC emergency call. This radio also supports the maximum allowable transmit power of 6 watts, plus 2.5- and 1-watt power-saving modes. After you send a DSC distress call, the radio enables a powerful SOS strobe light on its front that helps guide rescuers to your location. It’s also
