Vfx Intelligent Creatures
Brief To create an entirely digital,
photo-real head and mask
A team of 60 artists led by vfx
supervisor Lon Molnar at Canada’s
visual effects studio Intelligent
Creatures developed and animated
the mask of the iconic hero
Rorschach in the feature film
adaptation of DC Comics’ Watchmen.
Actor Jackie Earle Haley’s head and
facial movements were tracked and
replaced with the animated mask
and inkblots that reveal Rorschach’s
emotions. The challenge was to
make it all look photo-real, which
involved working on subtle details
such as the texture of the fabric,
lighting variations and the accurate
re-creation of the shadows cast by
the fedora hat Rorschach wears.
