Antiaging & the theories of Aging
Free-radicals
This famous theory of aging was developed by Denham Harman M.D., in the 1950’s. The term free radical
(FR) describes any molecule that has a free electron and it is this property that makes it react with “healthy”
molecules in a destructive way. An FR molecule has an extra electron and so creates an extra negative
charge. This unbalanced energy makes the free radical bind itself to another balanced molecule as it tries
to “steal” electrons. If it succeeds, the balanced molecule becomes unbalanced, turning into an
FR itself. FRs are known to “attack” the structure of cell membranes, which creates metabolic
waste products. Such toxic accumulations interfere with cell communication, disturb DNA,
RNA and protein synthesis, leading to lower energy levels and general impedance of vital
chemical processes. Here are some of the best FR scavengers currently available:

Mitochondria
The mitochondria are the power producing organelles found in every cell of every organ. They are unique in that their DNA
is derived solely from our mother’s. The primary role of mitochondria is to help create the universal energy molecule ATP.
ATP is literally a life giving chemical because all our movements, thoughts and actions are generated from it. Yet very little
ATP can be stored in the body, and reserves last no longer than 8 seconds to a maximum of 2 minutes, (depending on the
cells in question and the conditions). Therefore, mitochondria need to be efficient and healthy in order to
produce a continuous supply of ATP, which is essential to the regenerative processes. These agents protect
and enhance mitochondria:

Methylation
The methylation process has been estimated to occur billions of times every second in the body. Technically,
it is a “cap” consisting of a carbon atom with three hydrogen atoms attached. Any molecule, (whether it be
DNA or protein) can put on one of these methyl “caps” and consider itself “methylated.” Once methylated, the
molecule can change into another, so methylation has an extremely diverse range of uses in the body, from
regulating gene switching, to mobilizing fats and cholesterol, to helping create different forms of hormones.
Methylation is vital to the healthy functioning of all cells, and helps them to remain more fluid. Unfortunately,
methylation factors decline in aging, and poor methylation is associated with disorders of the nervous system and
auto-immune problems. Following are some of the key methylation agents:
