Modafinil is able to exert this special effect by not
interfering with brain chemical ratios or amounts.
Instead, it makes alpha-1 receptor sites in the brain
more responsive to noradrenaline. It’s like turning
up the volume on the receptor so that when it comes
into contact with a noradrenaline molecule, it reacts
more vigorously and efficiently. This is an interesting
mechanism, since the neuroendocrine theory of aging
suggests that it is the loss of sensor sensitivity on cells
that is the major contributory factor in aging, (see
page 5 for details).
