Lover’s Soul book Jan and Dan (the mother-and-son team) bought us.
They’ve been a fantastic support over the last year, giving advice
and cheering us with their tales. I think our journey has a lot in
common with theirs: they were determined to enjoy their experience
together for as long as it took to get across. Their biggest piece
of advice has always been ENJOY YOURSELVES and we’ve been trying to
take it.
Guinness Book of Records
We’ve both been wondering if we’ll end up in the big book - ‘First
Mother and Daughter to Row an Ocean’, that sort of thing. It would
be absolutely fantastic if we did. Since watching Record Breakers
as a kid I’ve always wanted to break a record – I remember a
moustachioed German man came on the show with his daughter,
and they had an apple peel the length of a football pitch (or
something like that). I thought that was cool and that I could do
it.
Thinking about it, I may have to settle with the ‘row an
ocean’ record instead. We’ll just have to call Norris McWhirter
and ask him to meet us in Port St Charles with an adjudicator
and a stopwatch.
Notes from the arboretum
Mum felled the final mighty stems of our first batch [of cress]
yesterday to add to her mashed potato so I’ve sown some more
seeds this morning. These succulent tufts have satisfied
not only our hunger but also our need to nurture. If the
cress is happy then so are we!
Tales from the aquarium
Two new fish have joined our happy aqua-clan, albeit
briefly. The first was a strange but very large grey fish,
which we mistook for a dolphin or a shark, about two
metres long if not more. It was light grey in colour and
swam near the surface of the waves. Because of its colour
it was difficult to distinguish any features; we couldn’t
make out the fin or the tail shapes. I’ve decided it’s got
to be a shark, certainly until somebody can tell us any
different.
The second arrived today with several friends - GIANT
STRIPIES!! They were about a metre long, skinny and, of
course, stripy black and white. They look similar to pike
- a narrow long head, small fins and well ’ard. They saunter
menacingly around the boat. Let’s hope they don’t get too
friendly with our mini stripies – they’re still wiggling
away at the bow, keeping up as best they can.
Tommo’s worried about our wishing for a killer whale,
he’s basically concerned because they have a rather nasty

habit of ‘killing’. Well, I’m sure they won’t find much sport
in killing a wooden boat. Much as I would like to credit them with
a great deal of intelligence it’s unlikely they’ll know their lunch

is pottering about on the deck. Anyway, Mum and I are convinced our

decks! u
