row
roWing Your WaY across 3,000 miles of Atlantic ocean
to raise funds for epilepsy research isn’t everyone’s idea of fun
but for Sally Kettle it was the challenge of a lifetime. When the
original plan of rowing transatlantic with her boyfriend failed,
Sally invited her mother to step in and take his place.
row
Sally and Sarah set off on their 105-day voyage from La
Gomera in the Canaries to Barbados. Their boat – Calderdale
– was specially made from marine ply, carried a solar power
system, satellite navigation, a computer and a water-making
machine, but their toilet for the fifteen-week crossing was a
bucket on a rope.
row
They were the first British women’s pair to row an ocean and
the first mother and daughter crew, and they join a select group
of only fifteen women who have achieved this feat.
We join Sally and Sarah on their ocean voyage, having
your boat
spent 75 days or so at sea – this extract is a combination of
log and email and taken from Sally’s book, Sally’s Odd at Sea,
which is available at all good chandleries, distributed by Kelvin
Hughes. u
