The Power of Goal Setting
A
ccomplishing things on purpose requires
intention, focus, a clear definition of
what’s to be achieved (goal), a plan,
motivation and action.
Two years ago in January 2007, my son saw
my daughter and me cross the finish line of the

Houston Marathon and Half Marathon, respec-
tively. As we reunited in the George R. Brown Convention Center, he said, “I can

do that,” to which I replied, “Let’s get going.” We set a goal of running the 2008
1707½ Post Oak Blvd., Ste. 188
half marathon which we completed after an 8-month training program. Upon
Houston, TX 77056
completing the half marathon we were so pumped by the accomplishment that

within hours we committed and signed up to run the 2009 full marathon (26.2

miles). There were times during the year when we regretted doing that, especially

in July and August when we had to start running our weekly long run at 5 a.m. so

we’d be finished before the sun and heat became a problem. Finding the motiva-

tion to run 20 miles each Sunday 6 weeks before the event required a supreme

effort to defeat all the excuses we could have used to skip them. We even had a
fallback plan to downsize our goal to the half marathon which we could have

done if we made the decision by December 10, 2008. However, our goal, plan

and motivation kept us fixed on the original target.
Barbara Silberg Now, here we are in January 2009 and we will be running in the Marathon

on January 18 and my daughter who was sidelined with several injuries last year

will be joining us. I can assure you that it would not have been possible without

L. Carrington As we turn the calendar into 2009 it’s a good idea to give some thought to

how satisfied we are with where we are in our journey. For me, as I approached

40 ( many years ago) I was determined to maintain my health and a reasonable

level of fitness, strength and flexibility as the years passed. While I have not

always been as diligent as I’d like to have been it was always sufficient to main-
tain interest and a reasonable level of health and fitness. Goal setting has never
