WE’RE MOVING MAY 16

M

ark it down. On May 16, 2016, US Lacrosse’s 25- year residency on University Parkway in Baltimore

— adjacent to Johns Hopkins’ hallowed Homewood Field — will end. It’s bittersweet.

On one hand, the new National Lacrosse Center will position US Lacrosse and the sport for long-term growth and success. Construction was funded entirely by a $15 million capital campaign which demonstrated just how eager the lacrosse community was to have a true national hub for the sport — one that will house a stadium and training center for the U.S. national teams and support US Lacrosse’s growing

portfolio of educational offerings. On the other hand, we leave

behind a quarter-century of memories. When I joined US Lacrosse as Lacrosse Magazine’s first staff writer in 2005, there were about 25 full-time employees here. That number has nearly tripled in the last decade. But the people who have come and gone from this place all had a role in making it one of the most influential governing bodies in all of sports. It’s always been about the people. Heck, I met my wife in this building. But it’s time for a new chapter. What does it mean for you? For one, we have a new mailing address. Starting May 16, please send mail to 2 Loveton Circle, Sparks, MD 21152. Phone and fax numbers and extensions, email addresses and the like will remain the same.

So give us a shout, drop us a line and let us know how excited you are to visit us in our new home, which also will include the National Lacrosse Museum and Hall of Fame, with a grand opening in September.

4 LACROSSE MAGAZINE » May 2016 LM VAULT BACK-TO-BACK JULY/AUGUST 1997

With a 19-7 rout of Maryland powered by a combined 18 points from Jon Hess, Jesse Hubbard and Chris Massey, Princeton won consecutive NCAA titles for the first time in the Bill Tierney era, and would add another in 1998 to make it three straight. Eventually the run culminated with six NCAA championships in a 10-season span ending in 2001. It is hard not to draw a link between that dynasty and perhaps a new one budding under the same head coach in a new place: Tierney at Denver. Repeating is hard. Tierney’s Princeton program failed

to do it the first — and second — time it had the opportunity. It wasn’t exactly easy in 1997 either. In a season that was noted for its parity (just like this year), the Tigers pulled out regular-season one-goal wins (two in overtime) against Johns Hopkins, Virginia and North Carolina, struggled to beat UMass 11-9 in the NCAA quarterfinals and edged final four first-timer Duke 10-9 before a then-championship record crowd of 30,580 at Maryland’s Byrd Stadium.
