Rule requiring teams to play man down after fourth card is implemented.


JANUARY//2009


New rules require teams to play man down after first card. At the youth level, any check to the head is a mandatory red card.


NOVEMBER//2010


US Lacrosse begins process of developing a unique headgear standard for women’s lacrosse.


JANUARY//2012


More stringent US Lacrosse women’s rules take effect to prohibit checking toward the body and head, and levy harsher penalties for offenders.


FEBRUARY//2012


US Lacrosse funds research by Dr. Trey Crisco to measure head accelerations from stick checks in girls’ and women’s lacrosse. Research is designed to provide better understanding of the injury mechanism for head injuries in girls’ lacrosse.


OCTOBER//2013


US Lacrosse joins other national sports organizations as a founding member of the National Sports Concussion Coalition.


JANUARY//2014


New rule change implemented requiring that all game balls include certification language “Meets NOCSAE Standard.”


NOVEMBER//2014


US Lacrosse develops Concussion Management Plan (CMP) guidelines and recommends CMP implementation by all teams, clubs and programs.


MAY//2015


New women’s lacrosse headgear standard (F3137) is approved by ASTM. SEPTEMBER//2015


US Lacrosse approves rule change effective Jan. 1, 2017, that the only optional headgear allowed for use must meet the new ASTM standard, F3137. Also beginning Jan. 1, 2017, games must be officiated by at least two certified officials.
