Save on Lighting; Save on Energy

One of the easiest ways to save money on your utility bill - and do your part for the environment at the same time - is to be smarter about the lighting in your house. Here are fi ve ways to save energy with smarter lighting choices:

As another new year begins, I would like to take a few moments to let you know of

some exciting changes in store for the upcoming months. Before I do though, I want to let you know of a major accomplishment of the past year. As you know, for the last six years we have been re-building

our infrastructure from the devastating 2010 ice storm. We have replaced around 900 miles or about half of the entire system. This was a devastating blow to your coop, both in size, scope and fi nancially. It was stressful and very challenging on the board and employees. As this major accomplishment came to a close, we are confi dent the new infrastructure will serve the membership well for years to come. Now we all hope and pray we never experience another storm of that magnitude.

In this ever changing world we live in, quick access to information is becoming expected. This desire is not any different when it comes to your energy usage. Several years ago we launched the MyMeter app that allowed you to track your daily energy usage. This was a nice tool but it lacked several features such as being able to pay your bill online. We have had several requests in the past from members desiring this option.

As a member owned cooperative, we strive to listen to the needs of our members. We also do all we can to take advantage of any new technology that is economically feasible to improve the quality of life in our service territory. With this in mind, I am excited to let you know about SmartHub. If you desire convenient account access and detailed information about your usage, SmartHub will put the power of data in your hands with mobile and web apps that present and transfer data in real time. The two-way communication available with SmartHub will allow

you to notify the offi ce of account and service issues. You will be able to determine which message to receive from Harmon Electric for things such as outages, usage alerts, and billing. With SmartHub you will also be able to view and pay your bill,

report issues, or review your usage 24/7, all in a secure environment. We are very excited to offer this valuable tool that will give you direct access to your account information. Be looking for additional information in the coming months in your newsletter and on Facebook for a launch date and more details.

All of us here at Harmon Electric wish you a very Happy New

Year and our mission continues to provide safe and reliable service at the lowest possible cost.

Monthly Board of Directors meetings Held Fourth Thursday of Each Month

1. Identify the rooms where your family spends the most time. Replace the light fi xtures - overhead, undercounter and tabletop - with LED fi xtures. They can last up to 50 times longer than a lamp or overhead fi xture that takes an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb. And you don’t ever need to change the bulbs. In 50 years, when the fi xture wears out, you’ll replace the whole fi xture.

2. Buy lighting products that carry a warranty of at least two years. That goes for LED fi xtures, ceiling fans with built-in lights and other products. If you buy Energy Star lighting products, the warranty is required.

3. Install ceiling fans. Choose a combo unit that includes both a fan and a light; your electrician can install it in the spot that previously housed just the overhead light. Ceiling fans move the air around and make a room feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

4. Use your dimmers. They’re not just for mood lighting; they’re for energy savings, too. Most dimmers conserve energy.

5. This one’s not new: Turn the lights off when you leave a room. Train your family to do the same. Impossible? Install motion-sensing lights or add a timer to your lights so they turn off automatically when nobody’s using the room.

Energy Efficiency Tip of the Month

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, the average household owns 24 consumer electronics products, which are responsible for 12 percent of household electricity use. ENERGY STAR-certified audio/video equipment is up to 50 percent more efficient than conventional models.
