lectric co-ops are warning members about scams being perpetrated on utility consumers.
Scams on rate payers are a growing problem in the U.S. The scams usually begin with a telephone call warning you that your account balance is overdue and your service is scheduled for immediate cut off.
You may be instructed to provide payment by purchasing a money card from a local store, and then giving that card number to the caller. Some scammers ask you for your credit card information.
In more sophisticated scams, scammers are able to “spoof” the actual utility number so the call appears on Caller I.D. as your legitimate utility. Some scammers leave messages asking you to call them back. If you call that number, the automated answering system often sounds very much like your utility, however, any option you choose delivers you to a real person who tries to get a payment.
Co-op members are reminded that Kiamichi Electric never attempts to collect money over the telephone. Delinquent accounts receive notices in the mail or automated messages.
Suspect A Scam?
Report it to your electric co-op immediately at 800-888-2731.
Members are also urged to report suspicious calls and scam attempts to the Oklahoma Attorney General Consumer Protection Division.

If you receive a call about your Kiamichi Electric account, please hang up and refer to your last electric bill. Never call telephone numbers or visit websites instructed by a caller until you check that information carefully against your billing statement.
Please report suspicious calls to KIamichi Electric immediately at 800-888-2731 so we can warn other members.
