Q Know the principles You know Choctaw Electric is a cooperative, but did you know that co-ops have a set of unique principles that sets them apart from other businesses? They are the known as the "Seven Cooperative Principles" and you can found them at www.choctawelectric.coop.

R MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE Back In The Saddle At CEC

etired life agrees with me, but I’m having an awful hard time sticking to the schedule.

As many of you know, I am “back in the saddle again” as Choctaw Electric Cooperative’s interim chief executive officer (CEO). It’s a job I'm uniquely qualified for, having served in this capacity a little over a year and half ago as CEC trustees sought a permanent replacement.

It's nice, too, to see an organization fractured by mistrust and abuse begin, however slowly, to pick up the pieces and focus on what's ahead. The process isn't perfect, it's not always pretty, and it takes a long, long time to fully recover. The board's ability to respect one another, work cooperatively, and recognize the bigger challenges this co-op faces ahead is a big step in the right direction.

c BY JOE HARRIS

Like my previous 'tour of duty,' my time here is short. The Choctaw Electric (CEC) board of trustees is in the process of interviewing potential candidates for the position. Once a qualified CEO is hired and officially on the job, I will say my farewells and return to the retired life.

In the meantime, it’s time to get to work.

A great deal has been accomplished over the past 18 months. Your co- op has trimmed its budget in a number of ways and your co-op finances are in good shape.

There is more work to be done, however, and I'm pleased to see the CEC board of trustees has not lost its initial drive and commitment, despite the long hours they are devoting to their jobs.

Any perceived lack of electric utility experience is more than made up by their tenacity. I can say without hesitation, your CEC trustees are serious about putting this cooperative on the right track.

HIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

There's another group I'd like to commend: Your CEC employees. Through this long

and uncomfortable process they have soldiered on through insults and accusations that had very little to do with them. Often it seems that we are so focused on external member concerns that we forget about the folks inside. Restoring your employee's trust and confidence in their co-op and its leadership is just as important to CEC's long term health and well-being.

We hear a lot of people talk about co-op linemen as "being on the front line." When you consider what they do and the weather conditions they work in, it's an accurate description. As a nation, we honor their sacrifice on National Lineman Day on April 11.

On that special day I hope you'll take the opportunity to thank your CEC linemen. While you're at it, please give a pat on the back to the rest of your electric co-op team. It will mean a lot to them and they deserve to hear it.
