Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture

Park [ GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN ] Meijer Gardens blend world-class sculpture with impressive plantings. See sculptures by Rodin and many others amid 158 acres of wetlands, woodlands,

meadows, and indoor tropical, arid, Victorian, and seasonal gardens. The Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory is a five-story, 15,000-square-foot facility featuring rock landscapes, a waterfall, and exotic plants from around the world.

The outdoor gardens include four-season plantings that make it worth visiting even during Michigan’s cold winters. The gardens are

especially beautiful when the leaves turn in fall. Besides the great Rodin, sculptors include Degas and many

other renowned artists from the late 19th century to the present. It is renowned as one of the most comprehensive collections of outdoor sculpture in the world. For more information, go to MeijerGardens.org.

Longwood Gardens [ KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLVANIA ] This gorgeous park, founded by Pierre S. du Pont, off ers woodlands, meadows, orchids, and most famously, its French and Italian inspired five-acre Fountain Garden, surrounded by Norway maples. It has 380

fountains — including a jet that rises 130 feet. Come on select summer nights to see it illuminated by colored lights. Christmas is also a popular time. For more information, go to: LongwoodGardens.org. Nearby Winterthur is an example of a “Wild Garden,” a turn-of-the-century style in which exotic plants are arranged to appear as if they’d grown spontaneously. Don’t miss nearby Chanticleer, a modern oasis.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens [ DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA ] This masterpiece of gardener Ellen Biddle Shipman, a pioneer in

American landscape design, is on the campus of Duke University.

Dedicated in 1939, it is considered

Shipman’s greatest work and a national architectural treasure. Most of the other approximately 650 gardens she designed have long since disappeared. There are five miles of pathways

throughout the gardens, which include many unique features, such as a carnivorous plant collection. Admission is free. For more information, go to
