Greenpeace Activists Damage World Heritage Site • So sensitive are the Nazca Lines, a region in Peru awarded the World Heritage designation, that even visiting dignitaries aren’t permitted to trod among the ancient etchings of fl ora and fauna. That was no deterrent to Greenpeace activists, however, who were eager to leave their mark during a U.N. climate conference. Activists trespassed onto the

fragile site to erect garish yellow banners announcing: “Time for change! The future is renewable. Greenpeace.” Greenpeace offi cials initially suggested the demonstrators were “absolutely careful to protect the Nazca Lines” — but the Peruvian government said they left shoe prints. While continuing to deny any damage, Greenpeace fi nally apologized for “any off ense Peruvians may have taken.”

South Korea: North’s Nuclear Weapons Now Threaten U.S. • Sony’s The Interview may have portrayed North Korea’s leaders as a gang of bumbling idiots, but South Korea’s Defense Ministry off ers a very diff erent view. They warn the Hermit Kingdom

has made “signifi cant” strides toward miniaturizing a nuclear warhead — a

key step toward designing a weapon small enough to use as a missile payload. A South Korean white paper also indicates the North has a missile able to strike the U.S. West Coast. In April 2013, a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities arrived at similar conclusions. But President Obama declared, “We do not think that they have that capacity.”
