News IOP Publishing expands OA environmental portfolio

Responding to the increasing demand for sustainable energy research, IOP Publishing is launching a new open access (OA) environmental research journal. Environmental Research: Energy (EREN) will openly publish the latest findings around clean and sustainable energy for all. Aligned with a number of the UN’s sustainable development goals, the journal launch comes at a time when research output around renewable energy and sustainability has seen a 600% increase compared with 10 years ago. EREN is the latest addition to IOP Publishing's expanding Environmental Research series of open access journals. The series builds on the established reputation of Environmental Research Letters (ERL). Multidisciplinary in nature, EREN will appeal to research scientists, economists, engineers, and social scientists who are working towards discoveries and sustainable solutions in energy consumption and supply. The journal will open for submissions later in 2023. In the spirit of transparency and reproducibility, authors publishing in the journal are encouraged to share data and code

where appropriate for the benefit of the research community. Authors also have the option to submit their papers for double anonymous and transparent peer review. In addition, IOP Publishing will waive all OA article publication charges for articles submitted to the journal before 2025. Newly-appointed Editor in Chief,

Professor Emily Grubert from the University of Notre Dame in the USA, said: “Energy is crucial to the continued advancement of human civilisation. Simultaneously, our energy system has driven massive environmental and social challenges, including climate change. Transitioning the fossil fuel-based energy system we have to the clean energy system we need is a major and urgent interdisciplinary challenge. Environmental Research: Energy brings disciplines together to address system-level energy challenges, with an open access, society- owned publishing model dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge to the global energy research community.” Dr Tim Smith, Head of Portfolio

Development at IOP Publishing, added: “Our continued development

of the Environmental Research series reflects the increasing demand for high- quality research journals and outstanding publishing service across environmental science, and the role IOP Publishing has in serving this community worldwide. "We’re looking forward to establishing Environmental Research: Energy as an essential open access platform for researchers to publish work that addresses the world’s energy crisis and accelerates scientific breakthroughs in support of identified long-term sustainable developments goals in the energy sector.”

ScienceOpen and SciCrunch collaborate for REPO4EU

The high-priority, EU- funded drug repurposing initiative REPO4EU is launching an open science publishing portal based on ScienceOpen’s publishing and discovery technology. To increase the scientific rigour, transparency and reproducibility of the research outputs published, a collaboration with SciCrunch will provide SciScore reports for all manuscript submissions. The interactive portal Drug Repurposing Central will become a hub for high-quality open access drug repurposing research publications. REPO4EU stands for

Precision drug REPurpOsing For EUrope and the world. The aim is to ultimately host and grow an EU industry- level online platform for drug repurposing with a global reach to move the industry from imprecise drug therapy

to precision medicine. The platform will provide expertise throughout the whole value chain in drug repurposing – from freedom-to-operate analysis to intellectual property protection and business development, health technology assessment, ethics, and data governance considerations. As a member of the REPO4EU consortium, ScienceOpen will provide the technology and run the Drug Repurposing Central publishing portal. Founded in 2013 and based in Berlin and Boston, ScienceOpen has extensive experience in open access publishing, open peer review, preprints, and alternative metrics for research evaluation. SciScore uses advanced

technology to generate a scientific rigour and transparency report and a

score based on the methods section of any research article. These materials assist researchers, editors and funders in improving the quality and reliability of scientific research. SciScore was developed by SciCrunch, a cooperative data platform based in San Diego committed to making research data more FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable). Stephanie Dawson,

ScienceOpen CEO, said: “I am very excited to be working with the SciCrunch team to offer automated SciScore reports on all manuscript submissions.

Drug Repurposing Central by providing automated Scientific Rigor Reports to their authors,” said Anita Bandrowski, CEO of SciCrunch. She added: “Informing authors about their adherence to rigour and reproducibility guidelines, as well as the potential to take action based on the results is key to success. The inability for researchers to be able to replicate each other’s experiments and outcomes hinders drug development, increases demands on resources, and raises research costs, making it critical to address this issue.”
