Computing at light speed

Hundreds of millions of dollars have recently been raised by companies such as Luminous Computing, Lightmatter and Ayar Labs to drive the commercialisation of their silicon photonics (SiP) solutions for computing.

Silicon photonics is particularly suited to computing applications because not only can light-based chips transmit data around 10 times faster than electronic devices, optical processing allows multiple actions to be performed simultaneously. On page 10, Professor Graham Reed, head

of the Optoelectronics Research Centre’s (ORC) Silicon Photonics Group, discusses the various approaches being used to tune circuits in a way that saves power, a major challenge in the building of SiP chips. His research group is currently developing a non-volatile method of tuning photonic devices that doesn't require any power once it has been programmed. Rob Roe, on page 14, talks with Hugo

Saleh of Ayar Labs about its recent securement of $130 million to commercialise its optical I/O solution for new computing architectures, and on page 8 a report from Laser World of Photonics reveals how quantum computing could transform laser cutting.
