LMI gains FocalSpec tech through TKH acquisition
Allied Vision, Chromasens, Mikrotron, NET, Tattile and SVS-Vistek. FocalSpec’s Line Confocal
Te TKH Group has bought optical metrology firm FocalSpec to add to its portfolio of machine vision equipment. FocalSpec, based in Finland,
will be integrated into the LMI Technologies group of companies, although the FocalSpec product brand will remain.
Te TKH Group owns 3D vision firm LMI, along with
Imaging (LCI) sensors use an optical method based on lateral chromatic confocal scanning to capture 3D topography (surface geometry), 2D intensity (surface contrast), and 3D tomography (scanning multiple layers beneath a transparent surface) simultaneously. Tis is at sampling speeds of up to 27 million data points per second. Te acquisition of FocalSpec
expands LMI Technologies’ smart sensor portfolio of laser profilers and structured light snapshot cameras with confocal technologies. Te measurement principle
uses optics to split white light into a continuous spectrum at the focal plane, and then the reflected light is measured. A
shift in the wavelength peak gives information about how far away the object is from the lens and therefore the height profile. ‘Line confocal sensors offer a leap in technological performance for scanning opaque, transparent and curved materials, such as hybrid glass assemblies common in
cell phone manufacturing,’ said Terry Arden, CEO of LMI Technologies. ‘By combining this game-changing optical approach with our proven Gocator inspection software and volume manufacturing know-how, customers will be able to solve challenging inline metrology applications.’
EVE conference attracts 130 industry experts
By Thomas Lübkemeier, general manager, EMVA
The second edition of the Embedded Vision Europe conference attracted more than 130 international conference attendees from 23 countries. They represented the entire value chain from deep learning and AI developers, machine vision players, to users of embedded vision systems and even stakeholders from the financial sector. In his closing remarks, Dr Chris Yates, member of the EMVA board of directors, pointed out that AI and computational neural networks are now a dominant topic that will be here to stay. While AI

technology is now very powerful, the current challenge is ease of deployment for machine vision applications. For this, Yates said, further co-operation among small and large players would be needed, and conferences such as Embedded Vision Europe could contribute to a more vivid exchange between the players in this market.
Events in 2020 Looking ahead to 2020 the EMVA proposes a series of key events. The starting point in spring is the forum Control Vision Talks during the first three trade show days at the 34th Control trade fair in Stuttgart. From 5 to 7 May the series of application-oriented presentations brings hands-on implementation examples and new machine vision technology to the visitors of Control, the trade fair for quality assurance.
At the end of May, the Parma Vision Night will take place prior to the opening of the SPS Italia show in Parma. This is followed by the highlight event in the first half of the year, the EMVA business conference, which will be held from 25 to 27 June in Sofia, Bulgaria. After the summer break,
from 10 to 11 September, the fifth edition of the European

Machine Vision Forum will take place, this time in Cork, Ireland under the slogan: ‘Where research meets industry’. The focal topic in 2020 will be: ‘Accuracy, reliability and limits of machine vision’. The last quarter of 2020 will be dominated by Vision 2020,
taking place from 10 to 12 November at Messe Stuttgart. Here, the EMVA will jointly organise the International Machine Vision Standards booth. On the evening prior to the trade fair opening, the EMVA will host its International Vision Night, a get-together before the busy trade show days. This event takes place in a new location paying tribute to local Swabian food.
Welcome V-Optics We cordially welcome V-Optics as a new EMVA member. V-Optics is based in Marly, France, close to the Luxembourg and German borders. V-Optics designs, manufactures and sells sensors and measurement systems able to characterise reflective and transparent surfaces. The proposed solutions are based on phase shifting deflectometry technology.
