RSoft photonic component design suite
Synopsis has released the latest version of its RSoft photonic component design suite, with new features to streamline and enhance photonic and optoelectronic modelling. The software package reduces
development time with efficient analysis of silicon photonics components at the device, circuit and system levels. It introduces an interface with Synopsys’ HSpice circuit simulation tool for cohesive, rigorous co-simulation of electronic components in photonic circuits. The new features of the RSoft photonics component design suite include: S-Matrix/PDK generation utility to automate the interface between RSoft component tools, the RSoft OptSim Circuit tool, and
mask layout tools; Expanded effective index method (EIM) implementation in RSoft component tools; improved RSoft FullWave pulsed and broadband simulation; and expanded documentation and examples demonstrating how the RSoft tools’ sub-cell meshing capabilities can improve the accuracy and speed of photonic component simulations. New features of the design
suite include: interface between the RSoft OptSim and OptSim Circuit tools and Synopsys’ HSpice simulator for seamless optoelectronic analysis; updated PDKs including AIM Photonics PDK version 1.5b and imec PDK version ISIPP50G; support for PhoeniX Software’s OptoDesigner elastic connectors.

POSITIONING EQUIPMENT V-731 precision stage
For applications such as industrial measuring technology and microscopy, optical inspection tasks, and laser processing, PI (Physik Instrumente) now offers a new series of motorised XY stages (V- 731 and L-731) that work with velocities up to 200mm/s. The bidirectional repeatability
is 0.1μm and minimum incremental motion is 0.02μm. The XY stages, which measure 310 x 310 x 80mm, are offered with travel ranges of 205 x 205mm (8 inches) in addition to customised versions. They are controlled by PI controllers or, in multi-axis gantry applications, via an industrial controller from ASC, which was taken over by PI at the beginning of 2017. Either linear drives (V-731) or stepper respectively DC
FIBRE OPTICS Fibre endcaps
Fiberguide’s fibre endcaps increase power handling tolerances of optical fibre cores for high power assemblies. The large endcaps (up to 25mm) allow for very high laser input power, up to 5kW, with great efficiency. The endcaps reduce power density at the air/ silica interface, which is a common point of laser damage, allowing higher coupled power into the fibre core. Fiberguide’s laser processing minimises surface imperfections and maximises
power handling. Fiberguide can also exclusively treat endcaps with its RARe Motheye anti- reflective process, creating endcaps with less than 0.5 per cent reflectance. When coupled with RARe Motheye treated
fibres, Fiberguide endcaps produce an assembly capable of very high efficiency of transmission, with very low reflective properties. The resulting assembly is ideal for applications requiring high power, such as laser welding and engraving.

motors (L-731) are the driving force behind the new XY stages. The three-phase linear motors dispense with mechanical components in the drivetrain and transfer the drive force directly to the motion platform without any friction. This means that velocities OG up to 200mm/s are possible. The ironless motors are particularly suitable for high precision tasks, because there is no undesirable interaction with the permanent magnets, allowing for smooth running even at the lowest or very high velocities.
