Tere are not too many people in photonics that have 50 years of experience in laser technology, but Peter Baker, who has just retired as executive director of the Laser Institute of America, is one of them. He started his career in 1966 working for a US space contractor using ruby and CO2
lasers, and was appointed
executive director of the LIA in 1988. Te full story of Peter Baker’s life in the laser industry can be found on page 8, along with pictures of some of his earlier pieces of equipment. In the Laser Institute of America’s regular section, starting on page 35, Karl Schulmeister, who was a project leader for the third edition of IEC 60825-1, writes about laser safety classification concepts, while Michael Sharpe at Fanuc America discusses automation and laser technology. Elsewhere in this issue, Matthew Dale explores
novel developments in cooling technology to make lasers smaller and less complex (page 16), while Rachel Berkowitz on page 22 looks at cutting, engraving and patterning textiles with a laser. Tere is a report from the Laser World of Photonics trade fair (page 12), which took place in Munich in June, discussing the latest additive manufacturing methods, while the article on machining glass and sapphire with ultrashort pulsed lasers (page 19) shows just how far industrial laser processing has come in 50 years.
