Gladiator. We sailed quite well there with only four races. We could have won it, but we made two small mistakes on the very last run. Here in Baiona we started quite poorly and then gradually improved each day. Now four boats are fighting for third place; we’re all very close. We’ll start the last day in sixth place with 44pt, Paprec fifth, also with 44, Provezza fourth with 43, and Platoon in third with 42. Tomorrow will be an interesting fight. SH: It looks like very light winds… FB: Not my favourite conditions, but I can’t change that! I’ll have to do my job well, and I’m confident we’ll achieve good results in the last two races. In Saint-Tropez we sailed well in light winds. Maybe we struggled a bit downwind, but we need more racing to draw conclusions. So far we’ve only competed in 12 races. SH: Did you make many changes last winter? FB: We have a new Botín keel. It’s striking that the two leaders, American Magic and Alkedo, have Artemis keels. Both are sailing fast. Alkedo impressed me today in the second race. I hope it’s a coincidence, because we can’t change the keel right now (laughter). Maybe the debate will start among you journalists, but we’ll have to see after the next races. SH: Next stop Cascais… FB: Normally Cascais has strong wind and interesting waves. With more wind we feel comfortable; the racecourse is beautiful and very exciting. They’re beautiful races, especially with the typical north- easterly winds. Sled’s main goal is the world championship, more than the season. Last year I couldn’t race with Sled, and they finished runners-up in Newport. In Cascais we’ll fight for the title, as we did in 2021. To date that world championship in Palma is the best regatta I’ve done with Sled. SH: You missed last season and only raced one race in 2023 due to your commitments with Luna Rossa. Have you found many differences? FB: The fleet keeps improving and surprising, but everyone’s still fighting for every position. The boats remain evenly matched. I find it impressive that boats that normally hover near the back are now able to win races, as Alpha+ did in Saint Tropez and Teasing Machine did here in Baiona. SH: Do you think American Magic is now uncatchable? FB: This week, yes, although they didn’t dominate as much in Saint- Tropez. But if Terry’s (Hutchinson, Quantum) worst day is returning to the club with 10pt from yesterday’s two races in this closely matched fleet, that says it all! Carlos Pich

Ironies abound in the latest outbreak of hostilities between America’s Cup challengers and the Defender – not least because of the familiarity of the complaints. Much of the rocky terrain traversed in the latest round of bickering has been experienced before during previous iterations of the Cup – some of them when current complainers were in the Defender’s seat. What distinguishes the most recent unrest is the very real threat of a Deed of Gift Challenge derailing proceedings. While chest- thumping public accusations were lobbed back and forth, cooler heads were keeping the back channels open and engaging in urgent diplomatic initiatives to keep the Cup on track. The salvos followed the announcement of Naples as host city for the 2027 Cup regatta and began with clearly co-ordinated pro- nouncements from the Challenger of Record, Athena Racing, and American Magic grumbling about ‘a lack of transparency and co-operation’ from the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand. American Magic implicitly threatened to pull out of the next regatta unless equitable terms are agreed, warning it was ‘at a crossroads’. From the British camp came a declaration that ‘mutual consent’ had broken down – a precursor to the Deed of Gift option. Swiss team Alinghi, headed by two-time Cup winner Ernesto Bertarelli, joined in, lambasting the announcement of Naples as the venue for 2027 while simultaneously acknowledging that it ‘wholeheartedly’ welcomed the choice, agreeing Naples was the ‘perfect host venue’. Indeed, when Alinghi first won the America’s Cup at the expense of Team New Zealand in 2003, Naples was one of the cities – along- side Valencia, Lisbon and Marseilles – on the Swiss team’s shortlist
