COVID-19 – crisis communications Extra measures
To ensure that firefighters minimise the risk of infection during this pandemic, the following extra precautions should be put in place, where the situation allows: • properly clean all equipment – both before and after the use of any communication equipment, each FRS should have an extensive cleaning procedure in place, as the COVID-19 virus can remain on surfaces for upwards of 24 hours
• personal issue accessories/devices – wherever possible, issuing devices and accessories to one member of the team on a permanent basis will minimise the chance of cross contamination
• extra units – depending on demand, having two units per call out will allow for the team to uphold social distancing while travelling to the location; whereas the full unit in one vehicle will not allow for this
Because of the close contact required during rescue missions, there are many environments in which firefighters simply will not be able to keep the recommended distance apart, which is why implementing other safety measures where possible is essential
