FOCUS COVID-19 – business continuity Case study – Ballyclare’s COVID-19 response

THE COVID-19 outbreak presented Ballyclare with an opportunity to harness more than 100 years of experience in the protective workwear industry to help companies navigate the world of work during the pandemic. As news of the unprecedented scale of the outbreak hit media channels, along with it came the issue of sourcing high quality PPE, a problem facing both the public and private sector. As one of the leading workwear and

protective clothing suppliers in Europe, its existing supply chain network was perfectly placed to help meet rising demand. It has been working with this network of suppliers for decades and these trusted relationships became highly valuable during the pandemic for sourcing the genuine, certified PPE so vital to its customers’ efforts to protect themselves and their staff. This network’s worth became even more

apparent when it was realised that 97% of new suppliers professing to provide PPE were in fact not fully compliant with all UK or EU standards. At a time when this was clearly of the utmost importance, the company went the extra mile to double check certificates and supplier efficiencies to ensure quality, certified PPE could be delivered within the required timeframe. Customers needed reassurance that high quality PPE would be provided by their

deadlines, while additionally Ballyclare’s close relationship with the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) ensured that it was aware of certificates to avoid. It obtained confirmation of the validity of the certificates and documents directly from BSIF, again helping to secure PPE which met the strict standards dictated by the pandemic. Following the company’s existing sourcing

protocol, its teams were able to process more than 50 different certificates to narrow down preferred suppliers, based on the following: • available test reports and certificates • • • •

factory audit reports product quality

production availability price

To date, the company has delivered more than four million items of PPE specifically in response to this pandemic, that has been over and above the other life saving protective clothing and PPE which has been supplied to customers during this time. In what has been a truly challenging

and unexpected period of time for the entire community, Ballyclare has declared itself proud that it has held on to the values it holds dear, saying: ‘These values are at the heart of all that we do – trust, protection and innovation’
