Lisa Farnell Unique challenges (p26)


Lisa is a professional engineer with more than eight years of fire engineering experience, and has


worked on high profile projects in the UK and Canada, including Sainsbury’s corporate London headquarters, Calgary’s Bow Tower and Toronto’s 2015 Pan American Games Athletes’ Village. She has particular expertise in applying mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques to the practical field of fire engineering.


Bill Jones Telling times (p12)


Bill has 45 years of experience in the insurance industry working at Aviva, for over 40 of which he has


been involved with loss prevention services. Most of this work has been in the fields of property and construction, dealing with small and medium enterprises through to the larger and more complex constructions and occupancies within Aviva’s Global Corporate and Specialty division in the UK.


Yen Luong Unique challenges (p26)


Yen is a qualified fire engineer and chartered physicist with more than 20 years’ experience in fire and risk


management consulting in the built environment. She has international experience, having lived and worked extensively in London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Chicago, where she gained a wealth of knowledge of local fire codes and best practices. Throughout her career, she has practised fire safety in the areas of fire research and testing, design, engineering, construction, risk assessment and operational management.


Andy Nicholson Unique challenges (p26)


Andy is founder and director of the Fire Surgery Ltd. As a chartered fire engineer with 21 years’ experience in


fire engineering design, he holds a fire engineering degree from the University of Leeds and Masters from Cambridge University. A principal author of BS 9999 in 1998, he sits on the IFE Specialist Interest Group for Heritage Fire Safety and the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) Safety Group, plus a number of British Standard committees. He has contributed to the FPA’s Fire Protection Management of Heritage Buildings, Smoke Control Association guides and CIBSE Guide E.


William Roszczyk Heart of the matter, Future factors, Change afoot?, Taking care (p32, p40, p46, p52)


William is editor of F&RM, and worked in business to business journalism for seven years, focused on editing an international remanufacturing magazine.


Matt Ryan Unique challenges (p26)


Matt is both a qualified fire engineer and chartered engineer. He has worked in the fire safety sector for


13 years, including on several landmark projects (the Tower of London, Vauxhall, and Battersea Power Station, etc), actively contributing to industry and national fire safety committees and standards. Specific areas of interest include fire service access and residential smoke control.


Jan Wassall Heart of the matter (p32)


Jan has been production editor of F&RM for eight years, including two stints as editor. She has also been


editor of the CFOA National Resilience Team. Qualified in languages and heritage management, she was a government reporter analyst before moving to a career in journalism across a range of publications.


Sam Webb Groundhog Day (p16)


Sam is a retired architect and a founder of the National Tower Blocks Network, which advises tenants on


a pro bono basis. He is a member of RIBA’s expert panel on fire safety following the Grenfell fire and a technical advisor to the All Party Parliamentary Fire and Rescue Group. He was an expert witness to the families of the deceased at the Lakanal House fire inquest in 2013. His research from 1968 to 1984 led to the demolition of Ronan Point.


Paul Williams Treasured asset (p22)


Paul is an associate director who specialises in fire engineering with Arup. He has provided fire


engineering services across a broad spectrum of markets including buildings and infrastructure throughout Australasia, South East Asia and Europe. He is currently leading the fire engineering design for the redevelopment of Manchester Town Hall.
