improves and designs become ever more intricate, buildings will continue to pose challenges to everyone from the architect through to those responsible for fire safety, an element that unfortunately can either be misunderstood or disregarded in even the most high profi le buildings. It’s clear, especially after both the Grenfell Tower fi re and

Dame Judith Hackitt’s fi nal report into building regulations and fi re safety, that a change in attitude and approach is required in construction, and the fi re industry must ensure that it helps change perspectives in the building process so that fi re safety measures are incorporated, properly fi tted and untouched by the time a building is handed over. Want to write for us?
Articles can cover aspects related to fire, business and resilience planning, protection of lives and buildings, or insurance.
Our minimum word count is 1,500 words – we also require a two to three sentence author bio and print quality author headshot, for our contributors’ page, and high resolution images to support your piece. We do not run overt advertorial – the best way to proceed is to explain general principles or technologies in the context of fire and other risks, with mention of relevant products in a case study.

of Aviva on what the passage of time teaches us about different and complex buildings, before building safety expert Sam Webb points out that, 50 years on from the report into Ronan Point, little appears to have been learned about high rise risks, and he strikes a warning note for the future. We also look at public and complex buildings, with Arup’s
Paul Williams taking us through the approaches that were required when refurbishing and adding fi re safety features to Manchester Town Hall. The Fire Surgery’s Andy Nicholson, Lisa Farnell, Yen Luong and Matt Ryan then examine the fi re strategies for different and challenging public buildings across the country, through a series of case studies. It won’t have escaped your attention that there have been a lot of events recently in the sector, not least of all FIREX 2018! Our comprehensive report from the trade show covers the FPA’s Infozone theatre programme, with presentations on subjects from Grenfell to crowd safety, digital switchover to the responsible person and more. Other event reviews include the latest RISCAuthority seminar in Manchester, which saw insurers associated with the scheme attend for talks on drones, DNA marking and timber frame construction; while the FPA recently held a seminar on the Hackitt report that gave views on Dame Judith’s many recommendations for the sector, not least in terms of regulations, testing, third party certifi cation and competency. Finally, earlier this year in April, the FPA hosted a seminar
in London looking at fire safety in care homes, and our reporting from the day outlines the key points it raised in terms of case studies, fire safety maintenance and evacuation policies. Next issue will focus on climate change, wildfires and
forest fi res, fl oods and water supplies, and legislative issues. If you’d like to contribute an article to a future issue, please get in touch with me at
