Birmingham college partners with HS2 to support women in construction

SOUTH & City College Birmingham has partnered with several organisations including HS2, Women into Construction, The West Midlands Combined Authority and Birmingham City Council to provide women with increased job opportunities in the construction industry.

Female students are currently being given the chance to participate in a six-week programme specifically designed to improve their employability prospects within the sector.

During the first two weeks of the programme, applicants will gain essential skills and knowledge through acquiring their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card and completing the necessary health and safety training.

The four-week work placement that follows will take place at HS2, or one of its various supply chain companies. There are a variety of roles on offer, including Ecology, Civil Engineering, Design and Archaeology.

Kate Myers, Head of Skills, Employment & Education at HS2 Ltd, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for women in the region to find out more about HS2 and the roles that they can play in transforming our railways and the UK economy.

“HS2 provides career opportunities in so many fields and this is a great way to find out about the jobs coming up. 7,000 people have already played a part in

delivering HS2 and we want to see more women in the 30,000 roles the project will support.”

In the hopes of encouraging more women to consider construction as a viable and rewarding career option, members of the programme will be fully supported with travel expenses and childcare.

GAP Group exceeds £300,000 donation milestone

SINCE its formation in 2015, GAP Group’s Charitable Foundation, GAP Giving, has donated over £300,000 to 356 different charities across the UK and further afield.

Established in 1969 by Gordon Anderson, philanthropy has always been an important part of GAP’s family business story. GAP Giving has embedded these ideals and beliefs even further in the company’s culture, distributing a percentage of the company’s profits to various charities each year.

During the financial year of 2018/19 alone, the company donated £56,624 to 88 different charities including The Brain Tumour Charity, Wish Upon a Dream, CALM and the Samaritans.

In addition to making regular donations, GAP operates a matching scheme, named GAP Match, within which GAP will match any employee’s fundraising efforts, up to £750. GAP’s employees can regularly be found taking part in sponsored activities such as coffee mornings and bake sales to outdoor

events including walks, marathons, triathlons and three peak challenges.

Shaneen Waddell, GAP Giving's Chairperson, commented: “We are beyond thrilled with what we have achieved so far through GAP Giving, and reaching this amazing amount as we enter our 50th year is even more cause to celebrate. It is fantastic that GAP is

able to help people and give back to local communities in such a way; it is very humbling to be involved with such worthy causes.

“Of course, the outstanding efforts from our employees have enabled the company to reach this notable milestone – their enthusiasm, compassion and fundraising really makes a difference.”
