How would you say the magazine has evolved over the years, particularly under your editorship? Well, of course the internet has forced a great deal of change. We had already started an online magazine before I took over, but one of the first things I did was push further in that direction. We made a new, more up-to-date website and did a bit more with our online presence by uploading videos, etc. That was the biggest change.

We also did a redesign of the magazine to make it look a bit more modern. I think that is something that needs to be done fairly often, to keep it in line with new technology and other magazines in general.

What would you say were some of the tool and construction industry’s biggest topics? Well, if you look at the industry at the moment, the biggest technological development in recent years has been battery-powered tools, with no trailing wires for people to trip over on building sites. All the companies have really been working hard to improve their battery- powered tool ranges and the batteries themselves have come on in leaps and bound so even small ones will power some really powerful tools. That has been amazing to see unfold.

At first it was very stressful because I had never run a business before, or been an editor.

I will be fascinated to see how they will continue to develop. It is really helping the tool industry because it leads to more efficiency, and that technology can be utilised across other industries.

Also health and safety has come more to the fore, for instance, new regulations

in the working at height sector, and big improvements in the control of dust.

So what are your plans now for retirement? I’m currently working for an online afternoon tea company; you can have a delicious tea delivered to your house or venue anywhere in the South East. It’s quite time-intensive but rewarding.

I also sell a cooking device called the Thermomix so that’s another interest that keeps me busy.

But aside from keeping the coppers rolling in, I’m looking forward to enjoying the fun things in life a little more: I love to read and spend a good deal of time in my garden as well as walking and going to the theatre. I also belong to a choir, which is great fun and also involves travelling to sing in this country and abroad.
