SMART CITIES
Woven City created for MaaS trials
Toyota starts building a connected community for the next phase of its automated transport trials for future Mobility-as-a-Service

obility-as-a-Service (MaaS) has been around as a concept for a long time but has never fully come to fruition. Most projects in the field centre around enabling technologies such as power infrastructure, communication technology or autonomous vehicles.
There has even been the creation of proving grounds that blend all these technologies together to try them out in combination. Now, Toyota is taking MaaS to the next level by leaping ahead and creating an entire community from the ground up in the form of what it is calling a Woven City, the ultimate newtown idea with all the amenities of a normal community but with comprehensive infrastructure and transport connectivity, hydrogen fuel supply and a fully connected transport network with full autonomy.
WOVEN CITY Envisioned as a living laboratory, Woven City will serve as a home to full-time residents and researchers who will be able to test and develop technologies such as autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes and artificial intelligence (AI) in a real- world environment. According to Akio Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation, building a complete city from the ground up, even on a small scale, is a unique opportunity to develop a digital operating system for the city’s infrastructure. “With people, buildings and vehicles all connected and communicating with each other through data and sensors, we will be able to test connected AI technology in both the virtual and the physical realms,” he says. The city was designed by Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels, whose company is no stranger to hyper-modern architecture. According to him, connected, autonomous, emissions-free and shared mobility systems are bound to unleash a world of opportunities for new forms of urban life. “A swarm of different technologies are beginning to radically change how we inhabit and navigate our cities and we believe that Woven City provides a unique opportunity to explore new forms of urban life that could pave new paths for other cities to explore,” he says.
