sector promoting and supporting companies which design, build, refit and modernise ships, and supply equipment and services for all types of commercial and naval ships, ports and terminals infrastructure, offshore oil and gas, maritime security and safety, marine science and technology, maritime autonomous systems and marine renewable energy.

Bringing together such a broad range of businesses dedicated to the maritime industry is SMI’s underlying strength, demonstrating the many cross‐cutting synergies which exist across all of the markets which our members serve.

8 Society of Maritime Industries Annual Review 2017

John Murray Chief Executive

A list of our members can be found towards the end of this Review; however, a visit to our web portal, www.maritimeindustries.org, reveals a comprehensive product search facility covering a wide range of categories and designed with the professional procurement manager in mind.

Future Opportunities

The global political uncertainties and increasing interest in countries protecting their ocean economic area, will provide continued business opportunities for the maritime engineering sector. Furthermore, additional wind farm developments and the potential for tidal energy in UK waters together with the need for operation and maintenance support will require a range of capabilities from our members. There is also the decommissioning of offshore structures which has moved from the planning to the implementation stage and the interest in a wide range of applications for maritime autonomy to resolve a variety of challenges will begin to create financial returns. Moreover, new environmental standards form the International Maritime Organisation are coming into force, particularly the Ballast Water Management Convention in September 2017, in which a number of SMI members have an interest and is but an example of the continued demand for their products and services for which the UK is well placed.

OUR MISSION is to promote and support the interest of all companies that do business in the maritime industries. For more information on the Society of Maritime Industries either visit our web site or email: info@maritimeindustries.org.
