A Message from the Chief Executive

John Murray Chief Executive

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is the voice of the UK maritime engineering and business sector and a major contributor to the UK Marine Industries Alliance which encompasses a diverse industry that covers all aspects of the maritime sector. The UK remains a substantial trading nation and a large proportion of the maritime industry’s sales turnover comes from our

business overseas through exporting our world‐class capabilities in engineering and technology.

This Review provides a snapshot of how a number of our members are involved with naval equipments and operations, not only in the UK but wider afield, paying tribute to the “Year of the Navy”. As with the 2016 Review, autonomy still features as a technology which will have significance for large parts of the maritime sector working alongside established assets. However, it is not only defence and maritime security which is important for maintaining the UK’s strategic interests, there is also the softer area of effective marine science research which will be enhanced by the future polar research ship, Sir David Attenborough, which is under construction on Merseyside.
