ECONOMIC OUTLOOK In the run-up to the publication by the Office of National Statistics in mid-August, of the inflation figures for July, there was considerable speculation, following the unexpected drop in the inflation rate in June, from 2.9 per cent in May to 2.6 per cent. In the event, the Consumer Prices Index 12-month rate was 2.6

company, Grub’s Up – yes, that’s what it’s called – is currently selling insects for human consumption, but is also looking at animal feed as an additional option. Paula Pownall, the founder of Grubs-Up is reported to be ‘excited’ finally to be able to sell the crickets to consumers, saying that it meant that the business could be upscaled and production put on a commercial level. Ms Pownall, who comes from an agricultural background, said she also hoped ‘to get into the animal feed business down the track’, working with other breeders who produce crickets for animal feed purposes to commercialise the product.

per cent in July 2017, unchanged from June 2017. The falling price of motor fuel continued, providing the largest downward contribution to the rate, offset by smaller upward contributions from a range of goods and services, including clothing, household goods, gas and electricity, together with food and non-alcoholic beverages. Meanwhile, the British economy grew as expected in the second

quarter of 2017, but continued to experience what one commentator called ‘a Brexit-based struggle’, according to the Second Estimate from the Office of National Statistics released towards the end of August. The UK’s Gross Domestic Product grew by 0.3 per cent, the ONS said, while annual growth of the economy was estimated at 1.7 per cent. This was in line with the views of economists prior to the release,

with the 0.3 per cent growth representing a small increase from the 0.2 per cent growth seen in the first quarter. The final estimate of the UK’s Gross Domestic Product in the second quarter of 2017 will be released on 29 September.
