Every child deserves a stable and loving home but children who have been taken into care have often experienced trauma, abuse or neglect. Foster carers can help them through difficult times and have a long-lasting impact on them and the person they grow up to be. They really can change lives for the better. Unfortunately there is a shortage of foster carers in Wales which is why Barnardo’s Cymru is asking you this week to think about whether becoming a foster carer could be for you. You will receive full training, a dedicated 24-hour helpline to

social workers,

generous financial support and respite breaks. There is also access to fostering support groups to give you the chance to meet other foster carers in your area. We are always looking for ordinary people to come forward to do something extraordinary by helping support vulnerable children to rebuild their lives. We are in need of foster carers to provide long term, short term, shelter, respite recovery, and support for children even those that other foster carers may find too challenging to look after. With the ongoing support from the Moondance Foundation Barnardo’s Cymru has developed the Better Place Project which recruits and supports Specialist Foster Carers. These carers support a small group of children who have experienced a range of adverse childhood experiences.

Barnardo’s Cymru is also particularly keen to hear from potential adopters who feel they could provide a forever family for a sibling group through its Adopting Together campaign.

If you feel you could offer a welcoming, stable home for a child or siblings in care please contact Barnardo’s Cymru Fostering and Adoption Service by ringing 029 2049 3387 or email bcafs-south@barnardos.org.uk.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE HAIRSPRAY

Hairspray, this much-loved musical comedy stars Brenda Edwards as Motormouth Maybelle and Layton Williams as Seaweed. Alongside award-winning comedian Norman Pace as Wilbur Turnblad, Matt Rixon returns to the role of Edna Turnblad and newcomer Rebecca Mendoza makes her professional debut as Tracy Turnblad. It’s Baltimore 1962, where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way. Hairspray is a musical based on the 1988 film of the same name which starred Divine and Ricki Lake by cult filmmaker John Waters. With music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Hairspray originally opened to rave reviews on Broadway in 2002 and subsequently won eight Tony Awards. The production opened in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007 and won four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. Proving to be an international success, Hairspray has also opened in South Africa, Japan, South Korea, China and Dubai. Following the musical’s phenomenal success on stage, a film of the musical was released in 2007 which starred John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and James Marsden.
