The Royal Mint’s D-Day commemorative coin

The school raising awareness of plastic waste

Vaughan Gething, Health Minister of Wales

has

A South Wales designer has taken inspiration from military maps to depict the strategy taken by the Allies to land on the fi ve Normandy beaches as the foundation of this year’s D-Day £2 commemorative coin. Stephen Taylor, from Margam, near Port Talbot, has been a Designer for The Royal Mint, in Llantrisant, South Wales, for nearly 8 years. On 6 June 1944, the Allies invaded Normandy in the largest amphibious assault in history. With a huge invasion force the Allies stormed fi ve beaches code named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Overcoming a series of defences known as the Atlantic Wall, the Allies were able to secure a foothold on the continent and begin the liberation of occupied Europe. The commemorative D-Day £2 coin, designed by Stephen represents the huge and unprecedented scale of the operation, which was an all‐out assault by land, sea and air. The coin was designed as a tribute to those who planned and participated in the epic feat. Created in association with Imperial War Museums, The Royal Mint’s 2019 D‐Day commemorative coin is available to purchase from www.royalmint.com. Available in Gold Proof, Silver Proof, Silver Proof Piedfort and Brilliant Uncirculated fi nishes, prices start from £10. A donation from every D-Day coin purchased from The Royal Mint goes to IWM to help them continue their important work.

paid a visit to pupils at a high school who’ve decided to cut down on the use of plastic bottles. Pupils from St Illtyds Catholic High School, in Cardiff , believe that plastic bottles are contributing to the growing plastic pollution of the oceans and are on a mission to reduce their own plastic waste. Vaughan Gething praised the ambitious group of Year 9 students for raising the issue and for their conscientious work in applying for funding from the Virgin Atlantic “Change is in the Air” Award, promoted by the WE movement following their success at the annual First Give Awards held at the Senedd last year. The group of girls, working towards their Welsh Baccalaureate, were inspired by ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ and initiated a project to cut down on the use of plastic bottles in the school by installing two water fountains and by providing every pupil with a reusable water bottle.

Despite the group being unsuccessful with this funding application due to its fi erce competition, the WE Movement were so impressed with the girls’

they recommended the project be funded by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust Award. A prestigious award that works to fund and connect young leaders who are working hard to change the world and solve problems in education, health and the environment. The girls’ hard work paid off , they were awarded
