School’s Out A great day out at the Brecon County Show


As the fi rst Saturday in August slowly creeps towards us, we hope everyone is looking forward to Brecon County’s favourite Agricultural Show with its fi rst Lady President in 34 years; Mrs Hazel T omas JP succeeds Mr Richard Griffi ths in the capacity as President of the acknowledged oldest Agricultural Society having been established in 1755. It all began under the grand auspices of some local forward thinking and prominent landowners and businessmen and clerics in a smoky room at T e Liberal Club in London when the concern was the abject poverty of Brecon Town and the rural surrounds. A Society was formed with the aim to boost farming

improvements and thereby income and employment, via much coveted awards for skills for the trades of the day from ploughing to spinning of wool. T e Society even purchased and run three woollen mills in Brecon to boost employment. Today’s Society has no lesser aims and the show day itself provides fantastic competition and display of all that is best in your County from its livestock, crops and horses to the domestic craſt s and horticulture, as well as a trading shop window for all the myriad of local businesses that support this area and rely on its healthy trading. It’s a great and exciting day out for all and family with the


return of the Broke FMX Motocross display in the main ring to the many breeds of Sheep, Cattle, Horses Goats and Poultry. T e Terrier and Lurcher Show attracts competitors from far and wide and the ever-popular Dog agility provides hours of fun for enthusiasts with the Companion Dog Show also proving very popular. So, come all of you – it’s your Show whether from town or country. Do make use of some our special new parking arrangements at the car park adjacent to the Bus Station and National Park Offi ces to enable you to walk in easily along the canal. Solarsphere is a small, family friendly star camp held in Penmaenau Farm in Builth Wells. From 10-13 August, enjoy the fi rst night Sci-fi Friday fancy dress party. A full line up of music and entertainment, talks and workshops, over the weekend for the beginner and the more experienced amateur about various aspects of the Cosmos.
