Getting older used to mean winding down, but that’s no longer the case. With people living longer, healthier lives and the retirement age ever increasing, people are choosing to stay in work for longer than ever before. Talk to your employer Whether you’re hoping to cut down your hours, change roles or even just carry on as before, speaking to your employer is often the fi rst step in plotting your career post-50. Every workplace is diff erent, so opening up a discussion could lead to discovering options you didn’t know were open to you – ones which work well for you and your employer. 2. Work fl exibly The fl exible working revolution is here, and it isn’t just for working mums and dads. More and more people are looking to fl exible working to fi t their job around their life and maintain a better work-life balance. Who says you have to stay in work full-time over 50? Flexible working could be a great way to keep your toe in while giving you a little bit more time to yourself, or it could help you start a phased retirement. 3. It comes with its own challenges and responsibilities but becoming your own boss later in life could also be a fantastic way to keep your career going for as long as you choose. 7. Volunteer If you’ve been out of work for a while, volunteering could help you get back into a routine and gain the confi dence you need to go back to work. It’s also an opportunity to give back and do something fulfi lling, and it could provide you with up-to-date experience for your CV as well.
