Bellway says Stamp Duty reforms will help Welsh homebuyers
Reforms to the Stamp Duty system in Wales will help first-time buyers and families looking to move up the ladder, according to Bellway. Welsh Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford announced the new Land Transaction Tax following a visit to Bellway’s Monks Meadow development at Glan Lynn, on former Llanwern Steelworks land in Newport. Te new system, to be introduced in April 2018, will mean no land tax is paid on properties under £150,000. People purchasing homes priced £400,000 or less will pay the same as, or less than they would have under
the current
Stamp Duty system. For the first time, the tax will be collected by the Welsh Government and will be spent on public services. Sales Director for Bellway Wales, Billie Oaten, said: “Te Land Transaction Tax will be well received by the people who most need help to buy their first or next home.

“Te news comes at a time when the Welsh housing market is really beginning to demonstrate its strength. House prices are rising at a steady rate, more people are putting their homes on the market and more buyers are beginning their search for a new home. “Te land tax reform, along with Help to Buy Wales, will help to underpin this growth.” Nationwide’s latest mortgage survey
showed that house prices in Wales had risen by 2.6 per cent over the past year, compared with the UK average of two per cent. RICS surveyors have also reported strong trends of prices rising, buyers and sellers coming to the market and a buoyant lettings industry across Wales. Help to Buy Wales enables people to purchase a new home priced up to £300,000 with a five per cent deposit and
