Recycle your unsuitable Christmas gifts with Barnardo’s

LETTER TO EDITOR Theresa Smith and Gillian Talbot with gifts that can be recycled for Barnardo’s Cymru.

If Santa brought you a coff ee maker and you only drink tea or a hairdryer and you’re follicly challenged then Barnardo’s Cymru want

to

hear from you. The children’s charity is calling on people to donate their unsuitable Christmas gifts to their local Barnardo’s Cymru shop where they can be sold to raise funds to help vulnerable children across Wales. The money will be used

to help disadvantaged children, young people and families, including those who are living in poverty, who are disabled or who have been sexually exploited. It is estimated that more than £2.4billion worth of gifts given at Christmas are deemed unsuitable, with a third of those ending up gathering dust in the back of a cupboard. David Howells, Area Business

Manager for Barnardo’s Cymru, said:

“Our stores

are dependent upon the public’s kind donations. Our profi ts go directly into our work with some of the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people”. Barnardo’s has 715 shops nationwide. Shoppers can buy collectibles, household goods, books, toys, children’s clothes, books and accessories as well as men’s and ladies’ fashions.

Let’s make Wales even more age friendly in 2018 As the New Year unfolds, Age Cymru is calling on politicians and Welsh communities to make Wales even more age friendly in 2018. We want 2018 to be the year that older people get the health and social care they need, when they need it, so they can live a fulfi lled and dignifi ed life. We want this to be the year that older people are no longer blighted by loneliness and isolation but instead are able to engage fully with their community. And wouldn’t it be a huge achievement if we could protect older people from fi nancial scams perpetrated by unscrupulous criminals? We want 2018 to be the year that older people can choose a care home that best suits their needs. Finally, we want 2018 to be the year in which our older generation are cherished for their contribution to Welsh life, be it as carers for loved ones, community volunteers, valued members of our workforce, or indeed just for being themselves. Tell us how you would like to improve life for older people in Wales this year These are our big priorities for 2018 but we would love to hear from older people, and your friends and relatives, to tell us how you would like to make Wales even more age friendly in 2018. Are public toilets important to you? Does public transport serve your needs? Are you aware of all the entitlements you may claim? We would also like to hear about some of the many simple measures that are already in place that make life easier. For example, does your local shop provide a chair when you queue? Do your neighbours look out for you when the weather turns cold? You may call us on 029 2043 1555, e-mail enquiries@agecymru.org. uk, or write to Age Cymru at 13/14 Neptune Court, Cardiff , CF24 5PJ. We look forward to hearing from you. Happy New Year Victoria Lloyd Age Cymru’s Interim Chief Executive
