Cardiff ups blitz on cycle theft with free security for bike owners

A free cycle security scheme in Cardiff is being stepped up by South Wales Police in tandem with a leading city bike shop. Hundreds of bike owners have signed up to a pioneering initiative launched in May to tackle bike crime. Bike owners are being urged to take up free registration under the scheme, run by the police in partnership with The Bike Shed and national property register, Immobilise. Owners will simply need to turn up with their bikes for staff and police to complete registration. Two registration days have been arranged, on Saturday 9 September at the The Bike Shed, Cathedral Road, Pontcanna, and Sunday 10 September at The Bike Shed’s Tongwynlais showroom. The shops will be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm on both days. According to South Wales Police, more than 1,500 bikes were stolen in Cardiff between April 2016 and March 2017. In the UK, only two per cent of owners bother to register their bike to ensure its recovery, which means police cannot return a bike to its rightful owner even after its recovery. And thieves continue to evade prosecution. Police plan to set up more registration centres at bike shops throughout the city and expect the new partnership to result in thousands of bikes being registered with Immobilise in 12 months. Registration takes only a couple of minutes, with the bike’s make, model, an identifying code and a photograph being logged into a national data bank. John Higgins, of The Bike Shed, said: “This is a cycle crime initiative we truly believe in. It can make a real difference to reducing bike theft in Cardiff, and we are determined to register thousands of bikes in the area, making it very diffi cult for thieves to operate. We would encourage as many cyclists as possible to take part, especially as it’s free!”
