OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES THE CHASE BOAT CAPTAIN

This boy (or girl) has the cracking job of following the mothership. From a safe distance. Basically you get all the perks of being yacht crew but with a level of privileged independence! You probably get to sleep on the chase boat, you don’t have to deal with any onboard politics, in fact, you get to breeze on to the mother ship for feeding then swan off to your own private vessel for the best part of the day. You get to plan your own passages and do all the cool stuff. It’s like a mini-superyacht- captain gig. Sign us up!

THE LIKELIHOOD OF EVER BECOMING A SHARK’S DINNER

NAUTICAL ETYMOLOGY...

IN THE OFFING This phrase is quite simple to understand once you know that ‘the offing’ is the part of the sea that can be seen from land, excluding those parts that are near the shore. Early texts also refer to it as ‘offen’ or ‘offin’. A ship that was about to arrive was ‘in the offing’, therefore imminent, which is how the phrase is used today.

If you live a life of make- believe, your life isn’t

worth anything until you do something that does challenge your reality. And to me, sailing the open ocean is a real

challenge, because it’s life or death.

Morgan Freeman MAGNIFICENT MARINER WILLIAM ADAMS

William Adams (24 September 1564 – 16 May 1620), known in Japan as Miura Anjin was an English navigator who, in 1600, was the first of his nation to reach Japan during a five-ship expedition for the Dutch East India Company. Adams settled in Japan and became one of the first ever (and very few) Western Samurai. Soon after Adams’s arrival in Japan, he became a key advisor to the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Adams directed construction for the shōgun of the first Western-style ships in the country. He was later key to Japan’s approving the establishment of trading factories by the Netherlands and England. He died in Japan at age 55. He has been

recognised as one of the most influential foreigners in Japan during this period. ONBOARD | SPRING 2019 | 7

SCREENING The number of women attending cervical screening is in decline, currently falling to a 20 year low with 1 in 4 eligible in the UK missing their tests. This is serious. Ladies, find and make time to get yourselves checked! And whilst we’re at it, check your boobs and boys, check your balls!

DODGY RECRUITMENT AGENCIES Springing up once again and promising the perfect job, of course for a small fee…. Are you mad – DO NOT PAY THEM! If you are looking for a recruitment agency, ask around for referrals – use your noggin…

THE SEABIN PROJECT It’s a hot topic right now with marinas picking up these floating rubbish bins. These bins suck the surface water through them using a submersible water pump, catching all the nasties bobbing about and allowing them to be disposed of correctly.

YACHT CREW - THAT’S NOT OKAY Have you seen something you didn’t like happen on board? Do you need someone to talk to? This new Facebook group can offer the support you need. The platform allows crew to talk confidentially about any concerns they have, from health and safety practices to personal issues. A great idea.

NAPS Need an excuse to take a quick nap on the job? Well new research now suggests naps lower blood pressure, and are therefore good for you. You’re welcome.

WOMEN There’s been a significant increase in female deck crew and the British Department for Transport has granted funding towards a travelling road show where girls aged 11-14 can talk to females who work in the maritime sector.

PARIS FASHION WEEK Let us all know what we need to be wearing/carrying this spring summer and some of us were surprised to see tie-dyes making a come back. No longer just for the crusty patchouli smelling crowd, team it with a Prada bag and darling, you’re de rigeur.

DRONES Still annoying, seriously can anyone fix that buzzing mozzy noise please? Bad enough they keep shutting down airports but seriously now, can someone come up with a drone silencer? Other than shooting them of course.
