DRINK

URBANIS Situated halfway between the Piazzas Della Borsa and Unità d’Italia, this very chic affair is a pavement-side haunt of many locals come evening, looking for a quick drink on the way home. Especially good for a drink on a balmy summer evening, when they also serve outside snacks with an aperitif.

BAR STELLA Ideal for the slightly younger set, you will find a bevy of university aged kids here burning giant holes in their grant checks.

BIRRERIA BUNKER A plentiful and

varied selection of beers

on tap, this is a decent hostelry for beer lovers with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

CAFFE SAN MARCO A beautiful old-style cafe and famous literary haunt. Very traditional and worth a visit for an aperitif, but watch out for the steep prices.

BUCKET LIST

OUT TO BRUNCH Caffè San Marco is a splendid Belle Epoque coffee house which was a favourite haunt of writer James Joyce. Delight in the fanciful décor, antique cash register and po-faced waiters as you wait for your typical Triestine espresso served in a small glass.

PONTEROSSO MARKETS These daily markets have been setting up stall for over 200 years. On the banks of the Grand Canal, the stalls offer a variety of temptations from clothes to fresh fruit and vegetables, and the opportunity for some hot snacks too.

DRINK COFFEE With Illy Coffee coming from Trieste, the café scene here is amazing. Stop in at any number of the little shops around town for an espresso at the bar. Forget your double-mocha-vanilla- nut-low-fat-latte.

AN APERITIF Avail of anything from a glass of Prosecco (€2) to a complex, prize- winning wine from the Carso at €6 a glass at Osterio Da Marino. Early evening drinkers get superior complementary snacks. A glorious way to watch the sun set.

GELATERIA SOBAN Chiara Soban comes from a family of artisan gelato makers originally from the Veneto. They have three gelaterias in Piedmont, and have brought this first franchise to Trieste.
