New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Easy on the eye

Blending the original composite boatbuilding material in with one of its more modern contemporaries offers some interesting opportunities… both structurally and aesthetically

Coming together – albeit slowly – under the supervision of German boatbuilder Jan Brügge is this very elegant wood-carbon creation, designed and engineered by former Mascalzone Latino production supervisor and Cranfield aerospace graduate Thomas Tison. Several different companies are involved in the yacht’s build, including Brügge’s Baltic yard, Multiplast and CSC Composites in Turkey. The 48-footer is being built in a satisfying blend of two composite

materials with near-identical chemical constituents – wood and carbon fibre. Hull shell construction is a sandwich of 20mm Sitka spruce core with 3mm mahogany skins. For increased global rigidity the shell structure is then integrated with a complex network of carbon stringers and reinforcement ribs, many of which have a secondary role to play in the appearance of the finished interior. Some interesting material testing has been carried out during

this build, taking advantage of technical facilities made available to Tison through friends at Airbus. This has extended so far as to trial different clear coats and exterior varnishes for final finishing. To date weight budgets have been met. When the hull shell was

turned it came in on target at almost exactly 1,000kg. As well as 450kg of water ballast per side the yacht features a deep (3.2m) bulb keel which can be lifted to reduce draft to 2.5m as needed. While the hull is carbon/wood/epoxy the deck (above) and most

of the ancillary components are manufactured in infused carbon at CSC Composites. The final result should be an attractive alternative to a mainstream build with delivered cost expected to match a conventional composite one-off cruiser-racer of the same size. We await the end result with more than usual interest. Bob Dance, Hamburg

Still coming along. Spruce hull, carbon structure and deck weighing just eight tonnes; pretty The new Arkema 4 for skipper Quentin Vlamynck should raise the bar in this ‘sportif’ class

A second new Multi50 for Fabrice Quérec and Thierry Dupré will make sure that she does… Spacious and stylish performance cruiser that (actually) promises performance The US Fox TP52 team have decided to go all ‘Ichi Ban’ for their new boat Full-carbon racer-cruiser. That carbon fibre stuff is definitely catching on Another optimised IRC racer-cruiser, carefully pitched just above TP52 size This Verdier Imoca is pointing straight at The Ocean Race for 11th Hour Racing Xabí Fernandez is working hard (with the government) to be on The Ocean Race startline Two-time Figaro winner Nicolas Troussel’s Vendée project is managed by Mer Agitée Maxime Sorel is rebuilding Thomas Ruyant’s boat from the last Vendée Globe Juan K has one more Imoca to go… targeted at The Ocean Race

The build of Switchback’s boat for The Ocean Race has stalled (opportunity, someone?) Very sleek new IRC cruiser-racer from an interesting but little-known design studio Boat no1 of a series build of a new and stylish carbon lift-keel racer-cruiser

The second British AC75 is still coming together, as are three other V2 boats at varying rates Interesting performance cruiser with foil-assist for righting moment and pitch-damping Carbon hull, deck, mast, rigging, sails, probably the loo as well. Just in time for next Christmas Sailing should say thank you to Banque Populaire… amazing loyalty by such a big sponsor While François Gabart races the current Macif the next one is halfway there The first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan

The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running Big, fast and fruity-looking new cruiser-racer from Rolfie. Will launch regatta ready
