Farr Yacht Design’s 30ft proposal just happens also to fit the initial parameters set out by World Sailing for the mixed two-handed offshore discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympics


Many a slip twixt cup and lip, but working with former Mini Transat skipper Bret Perry, on paper at least, the Farr office’s X2 design looks a worthy successor to the outstanding Mumm 30 launched in 1997; a design that enjoyed one-design racing all around the world yet was robust enough to see service on the Tour de France à la Voile. The X2 is even more offshore oriented than its predecessor, yet


with displacement still kept to a very sprightly 2,500kg, of which 1,000kg is ballast. A deep draft of 3.1m allied to a plenty generous upwind sail area of 64m2


(141m2 downwind) will certainly deliver


performance – though given the lofty oceanic ambitions of the design team this powerful combination may mean experienced offshore stalwarts will take a little more convincing. ‘The X2 is also for real offshore use, up to the Sydney Hobart and


Fastnet,’ says Perry rather bravely. ‘The design brief has the X2 able to compete in all shorthanded events globally. Yet it can also be sailed at club level with crew in fleets such as the Super 30s in Australia and HP30s in the UK.’ Target IRC rating is 1.025. ‘The final sail plan will take account of our knowledge from the


shorthanded scene in Europe, including furling systems and a triple sail configuration with that 5ft prodder out front!’ Perry adds. ‘The modern hybrid-scow hull form provides many of the downwind


advantages of the full scow bow but sacrifices less windward per- formance in waves. The sharp chines aft are a tool to keep beam to a sensible level. A vessel of this length would have to be 4.5m wide to make full effect of a true scow bow, then you have all that

It was never designed with Paris 2024 directly in mind, but you can draw your own conclusions. ‘We have also taken a common sense approach to rules for class


competition; she will not be a cruiser/racer. Furniture costs a lot of money, so it’s pipe cots, a single burner and a removable head to meet basic rating requirements. You could say I have been a bit selfish about this design, because I’m going to sail it. I am not going to miss out on the fun. That said, I don’t want anyone else to miss out either.
