NautaDesign developed a newGT-style deck concept for Taniwha, whichwe can expect to see on other yachts in the near future

companionway aft, between the primary winches and an open transomastern.With the rudder mounted a fair way forward of the stern – another feature that’s ideal for light-wind sailing – there’s space for a generously sized tender garage on the centreline with a bottom-hinged transomdoor.


Rig and sails With sailing performance in light airs at the top of the owner’s design brief, Taniwha has the larger of the two sailplan options that Farr has designed for the Southern Wind 105 and her fixed, integrated bowsprit has been extended, projecting three metres forward fromthe bow. The carbonmast and Park Avenue-style boomare fromHall Spars, with titaniumfittings and EC6 bundled carbon standing rigging fromFuture Fibres. The spreaders are slightly swept back and she has twin backstays astern. The sail package is North


Sails 3Di. For now, her sail inventory is limited to cruising sails: a 100 per cent jib and a smaller working jib on a removable inner stay, an extra-large code zero tacked to the end of the bowsprit, an A3 spinnaker and a pinheadmainsail. However the rig is also ready for a full wardrobe of racing sails including a bigger square- topmain and additional spinnakers.


Smart weight savings The hull is a composite sandwich with Corcecell and carbon/epoxy inner and outer skins. The deck and cockpit, however, are Nomex-cored prepreg carbon sandwich. The interior furniture and non-load bearing structures are honeycomb and foamsandwich with wooden veneers. Taniwha’s overall light ship


displacement is 65.9 tonnes. ‘We wanted to save weight in a

the need for systems to be robust, reliable and easilymaintained. As an example, a Cumminsmain engine was chosen even though a lighter engine would have saved several hundred kilos.We wanted to maintain the principle of themost reliable engine in this power range.’ So how does she sail? ‘In sea trials off Cape Town in winds that ranged from7-23kts, the distinctive feeling was immediately obvious,’ says Marco Alberti, Southern Wind director and general manager. ‘Round the race course, this boat should finish first. Although she is designed and builtmainly for cruising, even if you are only racing ten per cent of the time, that is the ten per cent when you want to win.’
