When will we see you again? .… is now the question as the bickering drags on in New Zealand. The attempt to fully fund an America’s Cup defence on the back of a venue fee is certainly novel, and was obviously always going to hinge on the price tag. But by going firm on what looks to the outside world as a very high price right at the beginning of the discussion, then resisting every subsequent attempt to haggle, the options for Team New Zealand are narrowing daily. Of the European venues flagged up so far none is ever going to offer the $200million asked, the only venue candidates that might being in the Middle East; and depending if and which Middle East nation may offer something that is acceptable financially, there is certain to be a whole new round of political argument. If it was made public that Team NZ has lost both its principal backers, Matteo de Nora and Emirates, then this desperate approach to funding a defence might attract sympathy. However, looking in from the outside there are no indications this is the case. The departure of Emirates is obviously a real possibility, though they have stayed loyal to the team through several losses but also two stunning victories. But the idea of the team’s principal private supporter, Matteo de Nora, now a core team member rather than just ‘underwriter’, if that is the case, which we doubt, then the signal sent to other potential backers may prove insurmountable. It is of course still a private matter, but Dalton and De Nora would be smart to state their position. What a tragedy if two brilliant campaigners end their Cup careers on such a low note

Turning words into action. Building a recyclable foiling Moth based around a bamboo structure was an ambitious project to take on. However, the end result, while it may not threaten Tom Slingsby and his ultra sophisticated Bieker Moth, is undoubtedly a very impressive achievement. This is exactly the sort of innovation that Luca Rizzotti intended to encourage with his pet creation, Foiling Week, which now runs every year on Lake Garda. A sort of Weymouth Speed Week but with less barking eccentricity
