New Boats Table No limits They’re beavering away to bring you something a little different every month
We’ve always been fans of the aluminium Ovni range from Alubat in France – builders of famously rugged long-distance cruising boats which, unusually for the breed, typically boast a large enough rig to make for enjoyable and reasonably swift passage making. Latest out of the factory – definitely not ‘out of the mould’ – is
the new Ovni 370… which as you will discover the first time that the punctilious marina lads get out their tape measure is actually closer to 40ft overall. The 370 certainly looks a bit more, shall we say, modern than some of its predecessors, perhaps hinting at a new styling philosophy for the yard after so many years of that tra- ditionally stolid and reassuring image. Compared to the preceding Ovni 400, the new 370 is also a bit more nimble generally, with less beam, a relatively lower displacement (9,400kg) and com- mensurately lower though still very substantial righting moment. The advantages of aluminium for the long-range yachtsman can
be considerable. Not least that most cruising destinations will have basic welding equipment to hand to put your baby back together, while composite facilities are not always so easy to locate. Alubat follow the ‘expedition yacht’ style of a bare aluminium
finish, on the basis that the overall appearance of their yachts may not be as cool as a composite boat, with a high-gloss paint finish, but the Alubat yacht will keep her looks over thousands of sea miles with little need for cosmetic attention. See too here Steve Dashew’s long line of slender globe-girdling FPB aluminium powerboat designs – a type of craft of which we are also great admirers. Closer to land, the Ovni 370 should happily serve the needs of many, offering fewer worries with respect to damage in harbour or

otherwise in bad weather, and of hitting submerged debris; while also offering generous interior volume, plenty of natural light down below and similarly good visibility out from within. All Ovni models also feature lifting centreboards with shallow twin-rudders for easy access to shallow waters. The Ovni 370 draws just 0.92m with the board up and a maximum of 3.08m with it fully lowered. These Ovni yachts are far from inexpensive but resale values
are famously strong. Today’s base price for a new Ovni 370 is ⇔295,000 ex-tax and delivery, which is far from outrageous for a boat capable of grown-up round-the-world sailing. But a word to the wise… The price of aluminium has been steadily
going up for some time and so it is almost inevitable that the current finished price of one of these robust little sailboats will very soon be heading in the same direction. Paolo DiNero
